UI/UX & Design Engineer

Lead UK/UI projects to success as a Design Engineer.

UK
Permanent
Hybrid

StirlingX is seeking a UI/UX Engineer to lead the design of user experiences across our growing portfolio of products and platforms. This role sits at the intersection of product design, user experience, user research, and front-end engineering. The successful candidate will be responsible for understanding user workflows, translating operational requirements into intuitive user experiences, and creating a consistent design language across the StirlingX product ecosystem.

You will work closely with Product Owners, Software Engineers, Data Engineers, Domain Experts, Operators, Customers, and Senior Leadership to create software that is powerful enough for specialist users while remaining intuitive and accessible.

Role Summary

The UI/UX & Design Engineer will own the design process from research and discovery through to implementation support. The role requires someone who is equally comfortable engaging directly with end users, creating wireframes and prototypes, developing design systems, and collaborating with engineering teams to ensure designs are translated effectively into production software.

The successful candidate will champion user-centred design across StirlingX and help establish repeatable design practices as the company scales.

• Design intuitive interfaces for complex operational environments.

• Simplify technical information into clear and actionable visual experiences.

• Ensure consistency of user experience across StirlingX products.

UI Design

• Assist with front-end development where appropriate.

• Review delivered functionality to ensure design integrity and user experience quality.

• Support the evolution of design tooling, workflows, and processes.

Design Leadership

• Establish design standards and governance across StirlingX products.

• Advocate for user-centred design principles across the organisation.

• Support the development of a strong product and design culture.

• Mentor other team members in UX thinking and design practices.

Skills & Experience

Essential

• 3+ years experience in UI/UX, Product Design, Human Factors, or Interaction Design.

• Strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end product design work.

• Experience creating wireframes, user flows, prototypes, and design systems.

• Proficiency with Figma or equivalent modern design tools.

• Strong understanding of usability principles and user-centred design methodologies.

• Experience working closely with software development teams.

• Ability to communicate design decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Comfortable operating in fast-paced and evolving environments.

Desirable

• Experience designing geospatial, mapping, security, defence, aviation, robotics, industrial, or operational technology platforms.

• Front-end development experience using React, TypeScript, HTML, or CSS.

• Experience designing data visualisation and dashboard applications.

• Knowledge of accessibility standards and inclusive design.

• Experience with design systems and component-driven development.

• Understanding of Agile product development methodologies.

Personal Attributes

• Curiosity and empathy for end users.

• Strong attention to detail.

• Excellent communication skills.

• A bias toward action and delivery.

• The ability to simplify complex problems.

• Ownership and accountability for outcomes.

• A collaborative approach to cross-functional working.

• A passion for creating high-quality user experiences.
